How Technology is Changing Transportation

418

Regardless of who you are, where you’re from, and what you do, there’s no denying that technology has reinvented the way in which you live your life. One of the sectors that have been most heavily affected is travel and transportation, with technology leading to more efficient and better-quality options. As a result, the desire to travel has never been greater and the optimization of such has never been in the forefront as much as it is now.

It’s worth noting that advancing the technology of travel isn’t all about making things faster, but it’s more about improving the passenger experience in terms of security and safety. Similarly, transportation technology doesn’t refer to the mode of travel itself, but also the organization and planning of such. Discover more about how technology is changing transportation below.

Cars

First up are cars which are perhaps the most popular form of transportation. From digital parking management systems to electric cars, the automotive field is developing rapidly. Not only is technology transforming the way in which cars are powered, but it’s also optimizing how vehicles are operated and accessed.

Taxis are by no means a new concept; however, the way in which we interact with them has been revolutionized. Gone are the days of picking up the phone and booking a taxi well in advance; instead, we simply download an app, such as Uber, Lyft, or Bolt, and order through there. Using these apps means that a car can sometimes be dispatched to you in less than a minute and you won’t have to physically pay your driver, as the required amount will be taken from your bank at the end of your journey. These apps also have carpool initiatives so that riders can minimize their carbon footprint.

Speaking of carbon footprint, electric and hybrid cars are becoming more and more popular due to the lack of emissions and reduced running costs. The popularity of these vehicles has surged recently due to the extortionate cost of gas.

Last but not least, another advancement that is in development is self-driving cars. Not only are these inventions more convenient for the “drivers”, but they’re also thought to improve traffic flow and reduce accidents. Similarly, these cars are sure to provide more freedom to those with mobility issues who are unable to drive in the traditional way.

Trains

One of the latest advancements in the training industry is bullet trains, a term that describes a high-speed railway. These are currently in circulation throughout Japan, and perfectly connect residents from one city to another. The speed and convenience offered by these trains mean that they’re often as fast as flying when considering the extensive pre- and post-flight procedures. These trains are so innovative that other Asian countries are taking them as inspiration for optimizing their own rail networks.

Maglev is a new technology that’s being assessed by many countries, as it’s thought to reach even greater speeds. Instead of engines and tracks, Maglev trains are powered via the use of many powerful magnets, which levitate and propel the train along the track. Since these trains aren’t built with moving parts, this means that they can operate at a smoother and faster capacity than traditional trains. For instance, Japan’s fastest bullet trains can reach 224 mph, while Shanghai’s Maglev train can reach 267 mph.

As previously mentioned, changing transportation isn’t all about speed, as it’s also about comfort. Today, passengers can easily book tickets and reserve seats online, and most trains are equipped with Wi-Fi, meaning passengers can stay connected and entertained on their journey.

Airlines

As with trains, technology has meant that purchasing airline tickets is as easy as it’s ever been. Gone are the days of visiting the travel agent or calling the airline; instead, you simply head to the airline website, select your seats, and make your purchase. Not only is this more convenient for flyers, but it’s also often much cheaper, too.

Technology has meant that flying is safer than it ever has been, thanks to detection systems that inform you of the presents of drugs, weapons, or explosives. This way, passengers can rest assured that they’re not likely to encounter any bother on their flight.
